In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to run the Boston marathon. After realizing that a woman was running, race organizer Jock Semple went after Switzer shouting, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers.” However, Switzer’s boyfriend and other male runners provided a protective shield during the entire marathon. The photographs taken of the incident made world headlines, and Kathrine later won the NYC marathon with a time of 3:07:29. I can’t explain how much I love rulebreaking, society changing, progressive women.

Wow, this was as recently as the 70’s.  Seeing this posts makes me have a whole new perspective on knowing my parents ran many marathons together in the 70’s-80’s.  I wonder if my mother ever experienced something like this.  If she did, she never told me.

Colorado, Washington Legalize Marijuana | Drug War Chronicle
WASHINGTON: Initiative 502 legalizes the possession of up to an ounce of marijuana by adults 21 and over, but does not allow for personal cultivation, except by or for medical marijuana patients. It will license marijuana cultivation and retail and wholesale sales, with restrictions on advertising. Regulation will be the remit of the state liquor control board, which will have to come up with rules by December 2013. The measure creates a 25% excise tax on marijuana sales, with 40% of revenues dedicated to the general fund and 60% dedicated to substance abuse prevention, research, and healthcare. It also creates a per se driving under the influence standard of 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood.
COLORADO: Amendment 64 allows adults 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana or six marijuana plants, three of which can be mature. It will create a system of state-licensed cultivation, manufacturing, and testing facilities and state-licensed retail stores. Local governments would have the option of regulating or prohibiting such facilities. The amendment also requires the state legislature to enact legislation governing industrial hemp cultivation, processing, and sale, and to create an excise tax on wholesale marijuana sales. The first $40 million of that annual revenue will be dedicated to building public schools.

HEY YOU!  YES, YOU RIGHT THERE!  Stop scrolling for a minute and read this post about how you can help save the lives of this cool girl (That’s me holding a stuffed kidney!) and many other patients who need organ transplants.

That’s pretty cool, right, getting to help save someone’s life?  We’ve all wanted to be heroes when we were kids and now, you really can.  I mean, you’ve got two healthy kidneys and you only need one.  I have zero healthy kidneys and, well I really don’t like to think about what will happen if I can’t get a new one.  You have a pair, why not share?

But even if you are unable to donate or just don’t feel it’s the right thing for you personally (and I totally understand if that’s the case.  I’m not trying to guilt trip you into anything), there STILL are things you can to do help those of us on transplant lists!  Check it out!

  1. Reblog this post!  So easy!  The more people who are aware of the need for organ donors, the more likely someone who’s a perfect match will be found!  So just hit reblog and BAM! I’m one step closer to living a longer and healthy life!
  2. Have your drivers’ license changed to say you are an organ donor!  Goodness forbid that something should happen to you, you don’t need your organs after death.  Kidneys can be taken from live donors, sure, but some patients need lungs or livers or any number of things.  If you’re not using it, someone else definitely can.  The waiting lists for a cadaver kidney in my area can take anywhere from 5-7 years and in some places it’s even longer!
  3. If you’d like to consider donating your kidney to me, please shoot me a message and I’d love to get you the needed paperwork to fill out.

Thanks all you wonderful people for taking the time to stop checking out gifs of cute cats and pictures of Tom Hiddleston to read and pass this on.  You’re amazing, all of you!
